SPC Flooring Thickness and Wear Layer Guide: 5.5–8 mm and 12 vs. 20 mil

SPC Flooring Thickness and Wear Layer Guide: 5.5–8 mm and 12 vs. 20 mil

Vinyl flooring thickness involves two measurements: total plank thickness and wear-layer thickness. Check both before choosing a floor. A thicker plank does not always have a thicker wear layer.

This guide covers SPC rigid-core flooring, a type of luxury vinyl plank (LVP). Learn how to compare 5.5–8 mm planks and 12 mil vs. 20 mil wear layers for your home or project.

For the basics, read our SPC flooring buying guide.

Vinyl Flooring Thickness vs. Wear Layer: What’s the Difference?

Millimeters Measure Total Plank Thickness

Overall plank thickness measures the full product in millimeters (mm). It includes the wear layer and may include an attached pad. Check the product sheet for what the total covers.

This number helps you plan floor height, door clearance, and transitions to nearby floors. It does not tell you how thick the wear layer is.

Mils Measure the Wear Layer

The wear layer helps protect the printed design beneath it. U.S. listings often measure it in mils: one mil equals one-thousandth of an inch.

Wear-layer label Thickness in millimeters
12 mil About 0.30 mm
20 mil About 0.51 mm

Product sheets may round these to 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm. The wear layer is already part of the total plank thickness; do not add it again.

Comparing 5.5, 6.5, 7, and 8 mm SPC Flooring

Compare Total Thickness and Attached Pad Separately

Compare three figures: total thickness, wear layer, and attached pad. A thicker pad can increase total thickness without changing the wear layer.

Check whether each product includes its pad in the total. A 7 mm plank does not necessarily have a thicker wear layer than a 6.5 mm plank. An 8 mm label alone does not prove better scratch resistance.

Only add extra cushioning underlayment if the product’s instructions allow it. The Resilient Floor Covering Institute advises following the maker’s rules for underlayment, moisture, and subfloor preparation.

Check Finished Floor Height and Transitions

Moving from 5.5 mm to 6.5, 7, or 8 mm adds 1, 1.5, or 2.5 mm of plank thickness. Check these differences at doorways and where the new floor meets tile or another surface.

In a California remodel, ask your installer to assess the final floor height after removal and preparation work. Thicker planks still need a subfloor that meets the product’s flatness requirements.

12 mil vs. 20 mil: What Should You Compare?

A 20 mil wear layer has more material above the printed design than a 12 mil layer. With other factors equal, it is worth considering for heavier use. It does not guarantee a longer lifespan or approval for commercial use.

Compare What to check
Daily use Foot traffic, grit, cleaning, and furniture movement
Surface finish Finish details and available test results
Allowed use Approved residential and commercial settings
Warranty Coverage and exclusions for the exact product
Budget The price difference and what your project needs

Wear, scratches, and dents are different types of damage. A thicker wear layer does not make a floor scratch-proof or dent-proof. Read how the warranty defines surface wear and which damage it excludes.

How to Narrow Your Options for a Home, Rental, or Professional Project

Everyday Residential Rooms

A guest bedroom and a busy entryway face different demands. Consider a 12 mil option for a residential shortlist if the product allows that use. Compare it with 20 mil options based on traffic, care, style, and budget.

Busy Households and Rental Properties

For high-traffic areas, give 20 mil options a closer look alongside the finish and approved use. Consider cleaning routines and frequent furniture moves.

A rental is not automatically a commercial installation. Check how the maker defines its use, and keep the product name and SKU for future reference.

Light Commercial and Contractor Projects

Start with the project requirements. Match the product’s allowed uses to the space, traffic, and equipment. A 20 mil wear layer alone does not make a floor suitable for every shop or office.

Record each selected SKU and its specs. Check any substitute against that record before ordering.

These listings show the three measurements to compare:

CasaPro product Total thickness Wear layer Attached pad
London 5.5 mm 12 mil 1.5 mm IXPE
Plano 6.5 mm 20 mil 1.5 mm IXPE

London’s SKU is C-01V-91-55-03X; Plano’s is C-01V-70-65-04X.

Both list the same pad thickness, but different total thicknesses and wear layers. The table compares specs, not tested performance. Review each product’s current documents before choosing it for your space.

What to Confirm Before You Order

Prepare these details when comparing floors or requesting a materials quote:

  • Product: Name, SKU, total thickness, wear layer, and pad.
  • Use: Rooms, expected traffic, and project requirements.
  • Installation: Subfloor condition, moisture checks, floor height, and transitions.
  • Documents: Installation instructions, approved uses, and warranty.
  • Order: Measured area, installer-confirmed quantity, target date, and current availability.

Compare material costs and installation labor separately. A lower plank price may not mean a lower total project cost.

SPC Thickness and Wear Layer FAQs

Is Thicker SPC Flooring Always Better?

No. Choose based on the wear layer, pad, approved use, and fit with your installation plan—not thickness alone.

Does a 20 mil Wear Layer Mean 20 mm Flooring?

A 20 mil wear layer is about 0.51 mm thick. The full plank is a separate measurement.

Does an Attached Pad Count Toward Total Thickness?

Some products include the pad in their stated total. Check each product sheet so you compare the same measurements.

Can Thicker Flooring Compensate for an Uneven Subfloor?

The subfloor must still meet the product’s flatness and moisture requirements. Extra plank thickness does not replace preparation.
